Canberra and Climate Change
The devastating bushfires in Australia provided more evidence than ever of the vagaries of Climate Change. Canberra, the Australian capital largely escaped unscathed apart from fires threat on its outskirts. That said, the after-effects - the dense smoke pollution - lasted for days. Extraordinarily, a city well known for pristine air was pockmarked by people wearing masks.
And now, barely days later, Canberra is dark and dense again. This time with hailstorms. Last night, hails of golf ball size blanketed the city. On a personal front, three windows of my house in the very centre of Canberra were shattered, and the roof is now leaking copiously.
And yet the likes of former PM Tony Abbott and his conservative cohort in the ruling Liberal party, including current PM Scott Morisson, remain in denial about climate change. Evidence is now emerging that Australia is at the forefront of this global phenomenon affecting the bio-mass that inhabits ancient lands.
