I have just paid my Tax Assessment to the Australian Taxation Office. I have always appreciated that the ATO provides a chart detailing where my tax go – on Government Expenditure Australia-wide. It is precisely this kind of measure which encourages tax compliance because the taxpayer can know where her/his money is going. OECD countries do this as a matter of course. It is time Indian Taxation Office also adopted this practice. This is not just about compliance, it is about encouraging public literacy: How daily life – ranging from infrastructure to social services – is financed and whether their Government’s priorities in managing national development are right.
