Belarus: Wedged between Putin and Poland

4 September 2020

A few days ago, Peter Tesch, former Australian Ambassador to Russia, contributed a touching piece on recent developments in Belarus. I have now been made aware of a splendid piece on Belarus by Tony Kevin, former Australian Ambassador to Poland. It is attached. Both pieces compl(i)ement each other as an informative commentary on that ‘independent’ nation we dealt with in the eighties (in the UN context).

I should add that Ted Pocock, former Australian Ambassador to the Soviet Union (and my boss), had a particular affection for the Belarussians. We visited Minsk several times. But, no, I can not claim historical, political or cultural understanding of that country to the extent that Peter and Tony (and Kyle Wilson) obviously possess.
